i really do like blue
these were a pretty cheap ebay purchase. at first i wasn't totally sure but gave them the benefit of the doubt and pulled the low-cost trigger. after actually seeing them in the flesh, putting the laces in and giving them their first wear, i def have no regrets.

the phonecamera doesn't do them any justice whatsoever, in real life they're much more of a minneapolis purple.
this post is somewhat similar to the white/cream/gold new balance 860 post, except with the addition of conflict and resolution.

the second pair, a couple of hours after purchase
it's a tough call (because of my vast love of these) but i think these white/cream/beige/gold new balance 860s are my favourite pair of shoes that i own (and also probably ever). solid shoe, delicious colourway and excellent production quality.
the phonecamera shot doesn't really do them justice (edit: more photos here), but let me break it down for you. i am really feeling:
the crisp white fabric in the toebox the luxurious cream suede the understated beige (i am often anti-beige but in this context i'm feeling it) and the way it flares out at the front towards the outside of the shoe in a manner similar to antlers the gold N, but specifically how they managed to put metallic gold on a shoe without it being tacky the way the tongues pop (not shown in the above photo) the nice laces
a testament to how much this pair of trainers does it for me is that it's the only pair which i own two of. i bought my first pair this time last year for a notable sum. i was at the new balance outlet store (!) with jeni a few weeks ago and saw another pair on display for $70 (yeah) but in a size 8 (no). i started rifling through heaps of boxes but it wasn't looking good because it was mostly these but then after a little while of only looking in the massive boxes, i found the white/cream/beige/gold pair in a 13. i felt like i was a pharoah surfing a slave dolphin on a massive wave down the nile - I COULD DO NO WRONG.
if i should ever be as lucky as to get the chance to do a collaboration with new balance, and they let me pick which model, it would def be the 860. the 576 is great, but i prefer the 860. they're a little bit sleeker, have the antler bits and also those ankle straps. i would most probably have a serious go at trying to make the ankle straps look as good as they do on these ventilators.

tip of the iceberg
major regrets, 1985-2007:
- amount of time spent in my first relationship
- spending two years with synths and an mpc and not finishing a demo
- not biting the bullet and just spending the money to fly back to perth and see daft punk with (almost*) all the people that i miss, love and care the most about in the entire world

raggamuffin ft. my new trainers
loving this pair of shoes. they're almost as wicked as the pre-chorus synth-flourish at 1:34 in "nine lives" (aka one of my favourite tracks of the year so far and one that's also currently looking pretty good for a solid all-time placing).

| | melodie mc "dum da dum" | ] | last night i went to see joel (master celebrator) dj at hugos for sneaky sundays. i suggested he play my edit of tittsworth's (wicked) remix of "set adrift on memory bliss" by pm dawn. joel was up for it, but got kicked off before he had the chance to play it because it was the next guys turn. he started playing heaps of sneaky sound system and daimon and connie plugged mics in and sang/"rapped" over the top (i think this is the normal thing at sneaky sundays but am not sure). after a little while daimon goes "could pm dawn please come up to the decks" and joel and i were like "did he just say pm dawn?". and then pm dawn rocked up (in a pm dawn greatest hits t-shirt). he grabbed a mic and started mc'ing over the top of whatever the dj was playing. the best/most hilarious/whatishappeningrightnow bit was when the dj played the kris menace remix of "north american scum" by lcd soundsystem, and pm dawn started freestyling over the top of it, and then during the chorus bits, connie from sneaky was singing the kate bush sampled chorus from "something good" by utah saints. at the very end pm dawn rapped over the original version of "set adrift...". i told him i'd been playing it a bit lately and that people were feeling it and he said "thankyou for loving us and supporting us", but the way he said it was kind of like he was reading out a fortune cookie. |

i think this illustration accurately summarises the last three saturday nights (busy p/justice/kim, bang gang/snax, ariel & tess' going away aka remember amplifier?)

ps. how wicked is "hearts on fire". it's got it all: the cut copy vibe, the italo-disco element, the early 90's dance pop / new beat element, the epic raphael ravenscar-esque saxophone bit, it's all happening. when i first heard that the new album is going to produced by the DFA i was quite deflated. but then I learnt it's Tim Goldsworthy and not James Murphy so that cheered me up a little bit. then I heard this track and immediately felt much better. then i bought the t-shirt. imagine how great everything's going to be when a) the album drops, and b) the single with remixes from joakim and (allegedly) midnight juggernauts drops. |

me at the best night i had all year
a bit late for an end-of-year wrap-up but this is it...
overall, 2006 was not a great year (especially in the context of 2005 being a real winner). quite a few bad things went down: the year began with the double ear infection in london in january, ended with scallywag getting run over on boxing day and had some other real downers in the middle. however, there were some really wicked bits too:
not in order meeting a lot of new people who i'm ecstatic to know and care about getting my white/silver adidas grand slam for £15 when they were still on the shelf in size? for £70 seeing cut copy the occasional good mix by me at cassette, the type that gets me excited enough to do the "cat on a clothes line" dance cassette lasting longer than a fortnight the out-of-nowhere pav limousine cameo seeing shane around the beginning of the year my cats the portion of the spring break party where i left the mixer-theft-induced rage behind and did probably the best set i've ever done that steak i had in hobart mehdi telling me that i resemble a young robert redford van she tech remixes fred falke solos swatches dim mak dino zip-up reebok koyomi hazuki ventilators claude maus jeans writing for drum and pages dj'ing to a full room (of people there for midnight juggernauts, not me) at moscow disco dj'ing with knife machine, van she tech, 2manyafros, bagraiders/gus & ajax at knife factory in sydney the cutters records party and subsequent afterparty having perth party posse at eurotrash for the first melbourne cassette the rest of the sydney/melbourne trip hooch party valentinos alpine disco afterparty / cassette at alpine disco tropical blitz cassette / knife machine cassette / teenagersintokyo cassette finishing uni wright st nye party
( more lists. and also photos )
a massive thanks to everyone who put the good bits into 2006
2007, ooh yeah.

finally. after 4 years, it's all over
after all the drama that was final year final semester, everything worked out ok - i didn't fail anything and will be graduating whenever graduation is pencilled in for. it feels so good to be at the end of it. this, combined with a few other things in recent weeks, has suddenly got me feeling heaps better about life and times. i almost feel like the bit in "omega man" where fred falke bursts into that epic, soaring synth solo.
